Unveiled: The Women's pavilion - by Cartier
This year’s Expo is the first one ever to have a dedicated Women’s pavilion. If this is a result of gender equality and awareness or the opposite remains unsaid, however the Expo committee refers to gender equality as a building block in the global Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the Expo 2020 Dubai committee’s press release the Women’s Pavilion is about women’s empowerment. “Expo 2020 Dubai has reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment, unveiling creative content and programming for the Women’s Pavilion in collaboration with Cartier that will celebrate women change-makers around the globe.”
Few practical details are yet revealed, but the exhibition in the pavilion seems to be focused on what women have done for the world all throughout history, and the challenges holding them back, rather than what society can do for women.
The central principle of the pavilion is “when women thrive, all of humanity thrives”. Gathering change-makers from both genders and all from all over the globe, the pavilion will “inspire visitors to become change-makers in their own communities”. The jeweler-sponsored pavilion will also aim to break “stereotypes and deconstructing misconceptions on women’s roles” through its exhibition.
Cartier’s role in the pavilion is so far presented in the architecture and creative content of the exhibition. Cyrille Vigneron, President and CEO of Cartier International, highlights the impact women has had on the world; “At Cartier, we believe that empowering women has a multiplier effect: it helps drive economic growth and development, and benefits societies and humanity at large.” He continues; “We are honoured to take our long-standing support to women change-makers further by collaborating with Expo 2020 Dubai and present the Women’s Pavilion to a truly global audience.”
All in all diamonds are displayed to be a girl’s best friend, even in the work to promote gender equality.
